Does anybody know why when you have a night flight (I.e.taking off in the dark) the cabin lights are switched off during takeoff and then put back on once in the air? I ask beause I was delayed 6 hours the other day because of a problem with the lights (they wouldn't go off lol)

one of the reasons is that if there's an emergency at the airport and you have to leave the aircraft, you'll be better able to see outside if your eyes are more accustomed to low levels of light. (it's a safety thing)
