can anyone one please tell me what creature lives in a greyish colour eggshell type ball with a hole in it which is the thickness of a pencil and attaches itself to the roof of a building

Sounds like a wasp nest.

Is the hole at the bottom?

yes the hole is at the bottom and attached to the garage ceiling,would a wasps nest look like an egg within an egg?

Yes it would. It is a wasps nest that you have.

At this time of year it should be dead - no activity. Just watch for 10 minutes and no activity - you can safely get it down and get rid of it.

I would be extremely suprised if you do see any activity though!
