is charging for tap water illegal?

Im confused on the laws of charging for tap water. Ive read its at the descetion of the licensee if its a resuraunt or cafe in quesion but I cant find anything for bars and clubs? Anyone know the actual law?

I thought it was illegal too, i have been told that you cant charge for tap water, but you do not have to give it away either, ie, you can sell them a bottle of water instead. I dont agree with it, and i could be wrong, that is what i was told

A restaurant / caf� is a commercial concern. You are asking them to provide you with a service, supplying you with water. They can charge whatever they wish. There is no law on this.

To further the previous answer from Richard, Restaurants can charge for water, but Nightclubs and Bars cannot. They have a legal obligation to provide free drinking water under the health and safety regulations.

They also have to provide it, whereas restaurants can simply make you buy bottled water.
