Lab on Plane or Boat

I'm going to Shetland from Edinburgh next July. I've never taken the dog there before and cant make up my mind which would be best for the dog.

The plan takes approx 1hr, the website says: the dog would be put in the plane's hold, where it will be safe and secure in a temperature controlled environment. The hold is unlit as our experience shows that pets quickly settle down and travel better in the dark.

The boat takes approx 14hrs, the website says: Kennels are heated and ventilated, and there is a water supply. You can visit your pet in the kennels during the voyage and there is access from the kennels to the open decks if you wish to exercise them.

Has anyone got experience's of either they can share? thanks

Think I'd opt for the boat, at least you can see your dog during the journey.

I think it depends on the nature of your dog. A one hour journey would seem to be the less stressful with regard to time spent on his own. He'd be out and off the plane in a shake of his tale. 14 hours seems a very long time to be cooped up. I think if I were doing the journey I would opt for the plane - you can't gauge what the ferry crossing will be like - rough or smooth! Have a lovely time in Shetland it sounds like a fabulous place to go. Lucky dog!!!!!

I have taken dogs by boat to orkney,(lived there for 5 years) I would probably dispute the quality of the kennels , as the orkney boat ones are not heated , are quite small and are locked during the course of the journey. they are usually on the car deck and are secured whilst the boat sails. Also be aware that if you are travelling during the winter or spring, the journey can take considerab;y longer due to bad weather. The crossing is usually quite rough.
