legal status

Hi unusual question time. I am not even sure of which category this belongs to so I will post it in a couple.

What is the legal status of Durham University. I presume it is run as a charity/charitable organization seeing as how it does not as such earn/make money. As such does it have a capacity for raising capital and if so how???????
