Santa very kindly brought me an Elgato Hybrid usb TV on my Mac device....which is very good and was very easy to set up. However while it does have all the FTA channels -I am very annoyed at it not receiving SKY channels -It is directly connected to our Sky box co-ax output......Any suggestions or solutions would be most welcome - even if it was only the Discovery channel to add to my list.

Hmm.

I'd never heard of the Elgato device, I don't use a Mac and I've not got Sky, so this took quite a bit of web searching. (i.e. I think I know what I'm talking about about I'm not giving any guarantees!).

Just for the moment, forget about the Sky box. The Elgato dongle incorporates a Freeview tuner so, as long as there's a suitable aerial attached (either the one which comes with it - if the signal's strong enough - or a rooftop aerial), you should be able to receive all of the Freeview channels:

The Elgato dongle doesn't incorporate a satellite tuner, so it can't be used directly (even with a satellite dish) to receive
satellite stations.

Now we can consider the Sky box. This contains a single satellite tuner so, irrespective of whatever else you connect it to, you can't use it to view two different channels (or watch one channel while recording another) simultaneously. However,
(Oops! I just dropped my pen onto the keyboard and managed to send only half an answer! To continue . . .)

However, you can send the output of the Sky box to any suitable device, which includes the Elgato dongle.

The coaxial output from the Sky box is meant to be fed to the aerial socket of an analogue TV. The signal is sent as a single 'channel', with the content of that channel being defined by whatever channel the Sky box is tuned to.

As well as its Freeview tuner, the Elgato device also has an analogue tuner. It's this tuner which you'll need to use to accept the signal from the Sky box. Read through the instructions to find out how to switch the device to 'analogue' and how to tune in analogue stations. If there's a suitable aerial attached, the device should detect the 5 analogue stations, plus the signal from the Sky box. If there's no aerial, it will only find the signal from the Sky box.

Now that you've got a 'Sky box' analogue channel available on your Elgato dongle, you'll be able to watch whatever station the Sky box is tuned to. (Obviously, the range of stations available will depend upon which channels you're subscribed to). However, as I've already indicated, you won't be able to watch a different channel to other users of the Sky box, because there's only one satellite tuner in use.

Thank you very much indeed for all your work.....I now can see why I'm missing Sky as I'm using it on the digital setting - and I am aware that I would be at the mercy of selected channels thru the Sky box (eg. if another family member changes the channel while I'm recording- !! ) I was aware before purchase of the Elgato TV hybrid - I have found though that I can flick thru the freeview and terrestrial channels......All I'm after is to be able to record 'during sleep times' eg Discovery- History etc. which I am not allowed because 'Soaps' get priority. Get my drift?
Again thank you for an outstanding effort....! -I will now re-tune in analogue mode.
