Antibiotics for stomach bug...

Has any body heard of taking anti-biotics for a stomach bug.. We have had a really bad bug on and off for about six weeks.. It is some kind of gastric flu.. We have been trying everything and doc advised fasting then light diet etc sterilising everything etc but it still keeps coming back.. Somebody I spoke to in my area said their family had the same thing and the doctor ended up prescribing antibiotics. Has anybody heard of this..

Antibiotics only work on Bacterial infections and not a virus. Gastic Flu is viral so they will not work.

also anti-biotics are not that good for the stomach, they cant tell the difference between good and bad bacteria, i could be wrong ask the doctor again

Yes I agree with both comments and in fact I can't even remember taking antibiotics.. In fact we rarely take any tablets.. It is confusing though the difference bettween viral and bacterial infections.. when you are told to disinfect everything you touch and that this bug is also passed on by touch.. is that not a form of bacteria...

Viral and Bacterial infections are passed on in much the same way.

i recently had a bad dose akin to your symtoms and this started on a saturday so obviously no docs.
so, i rang nhs direct and spoke as it turned out with one of these super type and very good nurses.
she asked all the right questions,symptoms and medication etc.
her answer was to only drink fluids for a couple of days and to take 2x4 paracetamols daily and said it should clear up which it did.
if you have had this for 6 weeks then this is serious as normally your immune system would kick in . you must if still poorly see a doctor. get well soon.

My daughter has a different doctor to me and this morning he prescribed her antibiotics as he said it has been so long that this bug will not clear without them... My doctor however did not prescribe me any medicine he said I must perservere with a diet of rice and potatoes until it clears.. I am wondering if this will ever happen as it has been about six weeks.. Will have to see how my daughter gets on with the antibiotics.... It's a worry we have the same symptoms yet two docs have totally different ideas...
