It WAS very cold. we had two nights in Leningrad, and three in Moscow. Which was no where nearly enough time. There is really a lot to see, and I found it ok, and the people very nice and helpful. Being ex Merchant Navy, and going all over Europe with the TAVR, I found it exciting, and would love to go again, through my age and disability, I shall not be able. Please! GO THERE it is worth it.
this time of year in St Petersburg it gets light about 10am and dark about 2pm, so the days are pretty short - not the best for sightseeing. In midsummer it gets darkish for a similar number of hours at night, which is much better, though you have to force yourself to fall asleep. Moscow is not quite so extreme but similar. It also gets very cold indeed in both in winter; summers are hot but not at all unbearable. I'd say summer, but spring and autumn should be fine.
