Download "google earth" for free via your search engine.Install and use the measure tool in either k/m or miles.You can work at any zoom level to measure between towns or even local streetsUse the path option as this lets you plot in stages rather than point to point "as the crow flies".It's a great piece of sofware and well worth downloading !!
