It is possible therefore that there are millions of people who would be familiar with the sound of your brother's voice. Now isn't that quite an awesome thought.
There are certain things that become iconic during one's life and 3 that do so for me are the aforementioned weather forecasts,The Archer's signature tune and the signature tune of Sports Report at 5;00 pm on Saturdays.
All three are somehow reassuring although it's quite a while since I've heard the Sports Report tune.

you are quite right cucuhullan - it is an awesome thought! I am reminded of an occasion when my brother was talking to a friend on a bus in London and a blind gentleman in the seat in front turned and asked him the time. When my brother answered he said "Thank you - you are on Radio 3, aren't you?" How I agree with you about the iconic sounds from our past - I remember the introduction to "In Town Tonight" and The Billy Cotton Band Show too. All very post-war "English" - where, in our memories, our roots are safe.
