Is it illegal to leave a down syndrome child home alone if they are older?

There is no set age limit at which it is legal to leave a child at home alone, the parent just needs to be assurred that the child can look after themselves and be able to deal with an emergency.

With regards to leaving children with special needs alone I guess you need to weigh up how adept they would be with being left and dealing with anything that arises.

I think as with any child it depends, as somebyrd said, on their ability to cope with anything that may happen whilst you are not there. Only you can make that assessment of your own child as you know them best. I know a couple of people with downs syndrome who have a full driving licence and some people who need full support 24 hrs so there is a huge range of ability as with anyone else.
I shouldn't think the fact they have downs would be a seperate issue, it would just be their ability to cope the same as with any other child.
