damn that's a fine observation!
Because some of the English language is stupid as Bernard Shaw pointed out with this.....

GHOTI. is pronounced FISH..........

GH from couGH.....O from wOmen...... TI from naTIon .
That ones gonna win me a few beers tonight I can see ;)
If it didn't have a D, it would be pronounced Fryje
f it didn't have a D, it would be pronounced Fryje

then doesn't that apply to the full word?
"Refryjerator"
I why is sergeant shortened to 'sarge' and not 'serge'?
No; in refrigerator, the e is part of the next syllable "er" but fridge has a single syllable, so if you wrote "frige" it would be assumed that the e acted as a modifier to the "i".
Fridge is short for Fridgidaire ( dont quote me on the spelling) a French word.
Frigidaire is a US company.

It never was a French company, as it was founded in 1916 in Indiana, America.
