News?
Given that we have one incipient nuclear war, one ongoing territorial war of increasing loathesomeness, an apparently unhinged president in the US, rampant Nazis striding the european political stage and a selection of amoral idiots in governement here, can someone explain to me why eithr the World Cup or Big Brother get so much airtime on the news? Not an original one I know, but sheesh....

In such a scary world, is it any wonder that many people and much of the media seek escape where they can, be it the World Cup or Big Brother? After all, your list of threatening and worrying situations could have been even longer - what about the famine in Africa, global warming, and pollution; and on the UK front house prices and the state of our railways? Far easier to keep your eyes on Beckham and the boys, and the BB housemates.
Sadly, a large proportion of the general population does not have the mental horsepower to understand an issue which lasts in excess of 90 minutes plus extra time or comes in 30 minutes edited segments. People I know are more interested in issues where there are clearly defined rules to follow therefore requiring no mental effort. "If I don't understand or it's not happening right here and right now it then it's not important!"
