What causes trees to die? This just bugs me! Ofcourse I mean other than people chopping them down!

If not due to the effects of old-age, the most common cause is disease, and possibly the results of pollution.
yes disease is the usual...amazingly there is a Yew Tree in Scotland which is estimated to be 5,000 years old!! Not much pollution there!

Rowas have a life of c. 154 years and birch don't live almost forever.

I suppose it is non sequitur.. never knew such a word existed until now.. but yes.. thanks for pointing that out.
EDDIE51: yes I think your right, although it was on BBC TV the other day and old michael hestletine (retired MP) described it as being 5000 years old...as does this web site:

Over 3000 and under 5000 then....so about 4000. How can anyone misjudge an organisms age by 2000 years?!
