I do understand the George, but not the Peter so perhaps it is used in the UK and not in the colonies?

O- ice the term Peter is slang for a safe or a prison cell and a safe-breaker is a 'peterman' !

I'm not sure how widely the word is used outside the UK- certainly not in Canada it seems!

Thanks for your explanation. The word is not shown denoting either a prison cell or a safe in my Canadian Oxford, but as you state it is a slang word. So, I have learned two new words today - peterman and peter. I hope my brain can retain them as they may prove useful.
