My wife will inherit her late mothers home probably this week. The insurance company who have covered the house and contents for many years will not give a renewal on expiry next month. They say that it is a second home, although it is furnished but unoccupied. We will have to insure the house and contents until we can sell it but can we get cover of less than 1 year and if so with whom.

Google for 'vacant house insurance' and you will find several specialist brokers.

It won't be cheap. One way to reduce the insurance is to take all goods of value out, and just insure the building.

Thanks Ethel,
We only want to keep the house furnished for veiwing as it may help with the sale. It looks like one of us will have to go and live there but then the council tax will come into play. The next door neighbour visits dailly opens and shuts the blinds and the house is alarmed. We live about a mile away but both work and this would not be a good time to be apart. Oh for a life less complicated.
