I think it's because trousers are now designed for the straight up-down shape that younger women have (all those alcopops and Big Macs giving them no defined waists!) Although I've got a bit of tummy on me I still have quite a pronounced waist to hip ratio and find that I get a right old muffin top if I wear hipsters (not to mention flashing my thong when I sit down!) while normal waisted trousers gap at the back. The best fit trousers I've found for this problem are Next and Wallis while I've yet to find a pair of jeans that don't gape - I've taken in a couple of pairs at the back (which is a complete pain) and resort to pulling in the rest with a thick belt (again, they aren't the trendiest but M&S Per Una and Next jeans gape the least at the back).
