Kitten Mess

Hi there,

I currently have one 9 year old female cat and I recently got 2 kittens from the same litter. They are now 5 months old (male and female).

I have a litter tray for them. My older cat is outside all day and only comes in at night and hasn't used a litter tray in years.

The kittens have been litter trained since I got them at 8 weeks which has been great. However, for the past few weeks my male kitten has been pooing beside the litter tray. I have tried a host of things to fix this such as changing the litter type, cleaning the tray more often ( I do this daily anyway), moving the tray etc. I always spray the area with a disinfectant bleach so the scent must go!

Does anyone have any advice on stopping this as its driving me insane!

Oh, also does anyone know how much it costs to neuter a male cat?

Try getting another litter tray, some cats when they grow up wont use the same tray that another cat has pooed in. I've had experience of this. as for the neutering you should try to get it done as soon as poss. some male cats start marking their territory ( peeing all over the house! ) if there are other cats around. I dont know how much it costs it varies from vet to vet also have you had the female done? if not you could find you might have a litter of kittens on your hands!! best of luck. Gelda

Thanks Gelda. I will definitely try that. Don't know why it didn't occur to me before cos it makes sense lol!

As for the female, nope she hasn't been done yet either. I wanted to get him done asap (because of the peeing thing) but I'm tempted to have a litter from her as she is gorgeous!

Think I'll be paying the vet a visit soon!

As well as another litter tray there is a spray you can get which takes away the smell from where they have messed on the carpet. Once they have messed they will tend to continue to do so in the same place, even if you have used disinfectant.
Contact your local cat protection league, they can help with the cost of neutering and spaying in certain situations.

i agree i have two girls from the same litter and its best to have two trays also i noticed you said you were cleaning with a disefectant spray i advise you not to use this bleach spray as she cannot smell any reminder of herself which makes her do the offending poo again, I would use to clean and I have dun a solution of 8 parts water to 4 parts citronella oil as the cats (and it works for dogs too) cannot stand this smell
