For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.The Funeral Directors will be able to advise you of the usual wording on a plaque, ie the ones that say something like ' In fond rememberance of a loving Husband and Father'. However apart from the excellent replies I am sure you will get on here, you could look round a local cemetery to see if an existing headstone or plaque has anything you could use.
Sorry to hear of your sad loss bernie, just put something personal about your dad, something that means something to you and your mum, don't rush into it,just sit down and have a think about the things you did and loved as a family, it is such a personal thing, when my mum went we just put something very simple, I can't remember the exact words but it was something like, " We feel you when the sun shines, we see you in the stars, you are forever in our hearts" it just seemed apt for her, hope you can think of something, take care bernie, we only have one mum & dad. Hi Bernie,so sorry for your loss.Last year I had the same problem to cope with and as said before, the undertaker can be of enormous help by introducing you to different ministers( religious or not) who have books of quotes and sayings. Please remember that it is not something that has to be done immediatly, you may find it easier to handle in another month or so.
I'm sorry for your loss. You and your mother must have had a sad Christmas. Would it be better to wait a little before scattering his ashes? Sometimes decisions made in a hurry at a time of stress are not always the ones you would have made if you'd had a little more time to reflect. I always think Easter is a good time because whether you're a Christian or not, the new life which Spring brings makes coming to terms with death a life a little easier. a little more meaningful . But if you want some words, something along the lines of "In loving memory of xxx, beloved husband and father. 1930 - 2006."
Bernie, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this very difficult time.
Did you Dad have a favourite song that you can choose a line from, something that he really enjoyed such as a sport, film etc....
Good luck and take time over it, I would write things down, see how they look on paper and then leave it a week and read it again. Again, do something that is simple and personal to you xx

At this sad and stressful time, take all the time you need - it won't matter when the plaque goes up - we took 4 years to make a decision about our daughter's plaque as it was just too painful and stressful before then, so don't rush anything - take your time. There are poetry websites which have lovely quotations, or even consider using the verses on condolence cards you have received. Inspiration can come from many places -we found a lovely cartoon to use while at the printers getting the funeral service printed.
