Or off your own back? I have always used the former, but am intrigued as have heard a lot of ppl use the latter phrase. Which is correct, and if it is the former, does the saying have origins from cricketing terminology?

It definitely originated as 'bat' and was a reference to the runs added up as scored by a cricketer's own strokes at the ball. It first appeared in writing almost three centuries ago. The 'back' version presumably just appeared as a mis-hearing of the correct version.
