I picked up an old piece of board in my back garden and under it were hundereds of insects. Then I went out about an hour later and they'd all gone. I wonder how many thousand insects there are in the average back yard?

That would depend hugely on what your backyard is like. If your backyard is all concrete, slabs etc, not very many, however if it has a lawn maybe a compost heap, a rubbish pile, a rotten shed a tree!! now we are talking millions!!!
