Hi, I am a 19 year old university student in Glasgow and I was, as a way of getting some small funding, wondering if mothers, or indeed fathers! would reply to an ad advertising my babysitting services. it would be possible for me to get references and everything and was just wondering whether any body would be interested or do people normally choose people that they know?
thanks!

now im no expert but im sure that if you look after so many children you have to be registered with social services or someone the law might be diffrent in scotland.wouldnt want you to get in trouble with the authoroties.
Whether or not you need to be registered, it could be worth checking out the legal implications with social services. I'm pretty certain you will at least have to undergo a full CRB check, for which you'd have to pay.

If you're able to offer any time during the day, what about seeing if you can find work at a nursery, or in a primary school?
Babysitters working in the child's own home do not need to be registered with anybody, or have any checks or insurances whatsoever.

It would do no harm in trying it out - it's the only way you'll know.

Good luck!
I'm wondering, though, Ethel, whether it's good to be able to offer a CRB clearance - might get more enquiries that way.
Sometimes it is not possible to use someone you know, I might reply to an ad. but I would want to invite you round for an informal interview to see how you interact with my kids. I would want to see references and would prefer that you held a first aid certificate ( the sort that you can get through the red cross for a fee.) it's about seventy five quid tho' perhaps a baby sitting agency might help you fund this.

My daughter does a lot of baby sitting, it started by friends asking her, they then recommended her to their friends, and so the cycle began.

If you have referances, ask those people you have baby sat for to pass the word around to their friends/relatives etc. you will be suprised how this can take off.

You do not need to be checked by social services or any other body.

Good luck

thanks, the only reason id need an ad was because I just moved to Glasgow for uni. When I was at home I was babysitting regularly for about ten different families, and was just wondering how I could get started here. But thankyou very much for all your comments!
Be careful for yourself also, don't arrange to go to someones house etc just on a phone call. It's difficult because as you say most babysisters come locally and through family/friends word of mouth. Are there any local students or tutors, catering staff etc who are at the uni who might be able to suggest someone. if not, try contact ing Surestart who might know of people who would use your services. Good Luck
All due respect Hannie, but why not just get yourself a wee part job at night say in a bar or coffee shop where you are around folk many who will be your own age?. Why would you at 19, want to be earing money by baby sitting for people probably every weekend, cos, lets be honest thats when most people need babysitters? Just a thought like. Good luck with whatever you do. x
