I don't tend to buy the big issue as i see plenty of people buying it and so prefer to give money to the 'doorway homeless'. I too, like other people, give them food that i have in my bag or buy them a sandwich from somewhere close. If i think they are sitting there of their heads then i wont give them anything.
Theres a big issue african lady at london bridge who i reckon rakes it in. i see people every morning give her a fiver for a big issue. Cos she is old she has a chair and just gets money plopped in her lap.

I have a follow a criteria, because we don't know the circumstances of these people, and as nox says, 'There bit for the grace of God',
I don't give if they have a pet with them and if they are smoking, I have in the past, gone to a shop, and bought them a coffeee an sandwiches.
But the other day, there was a chap just sitting on top of his belongings, nursing a cuppa. he looked so down, that I couldn't stop myself, I gave him some money, and the look of gratitude on his face assured me that this time, i'd done the right thing.
