Emergency Dentist - NHS hospital - Whats covered?

Hi
Does anyone know what an emergency dentist at a local hospital will do, in ways of treatment
My back tooth broke at the weekend and i think i am now getting an abscess as the gum is swollen and tender/painful
My dentist left the practice and they couldnt put me on the other partners books so i had to find a new dentist, which i havent got round to. silly me

Anyone visited an nhs Hospital dentist in the evening surgery session and would they do a tooth extraction and abscess drainage? (tooth broken so much that needs to be removed). Also approx cost ?

A friend of mine put me off having dental treatment at a hospital especially if a teaching one who practice their craft before setting up practices. He was in so much pain. Whether he was unlucky I'm not sure but I would stick with the normal dentist whatever it costs. Cloves and swilling your mouth with TCP are temporary solutions. Abcesses usually need antibiotics which your local GP can provide.

I had to go to Guys for a similar thing. I didnt cost me a penny for the treatment i just had to pay for the prescription and they were so gentle and careful. I had to go back a fortnight later when the antibiotics had worked to have the tooth out and even that didnt cost or hurt half as much as i was expecting.

RATTER15 is right. My other half had the same problem just before Christmas. Emergency Dentist at hospital refused to touch the tooth. He ended up calling NHS 24 where a Doctor prescibed antibiotics without seeing him. Usually you need a course of antibiotics before they will even touch the tooth

Depending on where you live there should be an Emergency Dental Service either in a Local Hospital or in a Local Dental Surgery. (Trust me, I know this as I Work in one!!)

The Dentist on the Rota will assess what needs doing but their Main Aim is to get you out of Pain - so they would probably treat the Abcess with Antibiotics before they extract a Tooth. At mine we charge standard NHS Charges which is �15.50.

Where do you live?? I would Phone NHS Direct and ask them where your nearest Emergency Dental Service is.
