All of the available fares are shown on the National Rail website:
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

Enter your journey details to find suitable trains. Then click on 'Get fare information'. If it's a return journey, compare the return fares with the boxes that say 'Single fares from xx'. If it appears that two single tickets might work out cheaper than a return ticket, click 'Show single fares'.

The best fares are usually available at off-peak times and when booked well in advance. If your travel plans are flexible, you might find cheaper tickets by clicking the links for earlier or later trains.

:-O if i travel to milton keynes from Dartford before 9.46 its 21.80 there and 21.80 back, if i go after 9.46 its 21.90 return! What madness! Thanks, for that site :-)
www.thetrainline.com also has all the fares and has one advantage over the national rail site - when you have the results of your search there is the facility to look for 'alternative slower routes with cheaper tickets'

Doesn't always give anything useful but worth checking.

Don't buy tickets from them by credit card BTW - they charge extra, use eg the Virgin site
