Do you still need a passport to travel within EU countries? or is it possible to use just an id card?

officially you no longer need one, but some people are still asked to produce it at checkpoints so it is best to take it with you just in case - it is also needed for cashing travellers cheques, hotel reservations etc - so it is best not to travel within Europe without one. some countries recognise ID cards and some do not, best not to risk it.
