I don't know if this is under your consideration, but if she's unable to see what the controls are saying, then it may be quite hard to operate the device itself, unless it's something simpler, such as the iPod Shuffle (has no screen, it just plays music).

I would have thought an iPod was less than ideal. They are notoriously unreliable, and the biggest selling point is the visual aspect. There are many cheaper mp3 players around which might possibly be more suited to operation by a blind person. For example I have have a Sony which I keep under my pillow, and I can operate it completely without seeing it, as every control is identifiable by shape and/or position.
how about this one?
it stores 512MB (about 130 songs?) , it's dead easy to use (just plug it in then drag and drop music files) and the controls are really simple, and it's a great price so not too much of a loss if it gets damaged.
I had one like this and would recommend it for the price :) And... I drop mine ALL of the time and it STILL works :) so pretty sturdy...
