We have just cut down 2 trees. What should we do with the stumps?

You mean the stumps are still in the ground of course. If they were conifers you should have left about 3 foot of tree as they are fairly easily levered out with it. I bet you didnt !
If you have cut them off too low for this or they are deciduous trees look for a product called stump killer in the garden centre. Apply and wait a long time.
It is important to remove them eventually to prevent honey fungus establishing in your garde.

Thanks Sarah. We've got one down to about 4', the other near the ground, then i remember something, vaguely, which you have confirmed.
