For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.when a cambelt breaks some valves will be open and some shut, they will stay in this position as the camshaft isn't turning. unfortunately the crankshaft still is turning so pistons will fly up and hammer into the valves that are open, destroying your engine. generally a broken camshaft = new engine needed, and for most cars, new engine needed = write off.
