How long can you safely store tinned food after the 'best before' date has passed and still eat it?

Manufacturers 'best before' date refers to the best quality and flavour of their product. It has nothing to do with the contents turning bad. Some of Scott's Antarctic expedition tinned foods were examined after 50 years and were found to be perfectly edible.

Hey tinned foods never go out of date I seen a man eat a tin of jellied chicken that was a hundred years old they are only saying the flavour is better before that date Leah x

Contrary to some belief's, tinned food WILL go off, albeit very slowly.
Anything that is less than a year past its "best before" date should be ok, assuming the can hasn't been bashed or punctured (especially around its rims).
