1,000,000 untaxed cars and vans.
How did we get into this situation? They now have roving vans photographing number plates along the street and comparing it with their database? Most are uninsured also no wonder their are many hit and run accidents. Not so helpful if you are innocent motorist!
What ogther techniques could be used so that they pay up? Cameras are installed in petrol garages. Why don't they record the number plate and with access to the national data base issue a ticket, or is that too simple?

I even sent in photos of my own car being hoisted away by the council's clampers which I had deliberately parked next to the van - i was ultimately in the wrong bay and it cost me nearly 300 quid that day trying to prove a point. needless to say the van was left sitting pretty. I got absolutely nowhere. So i'm not surprised by the situation at all.
