conifer tree mulch

I have 2 large conifer trees that have been blown down in the recent gales, can I shread the smaller branches and use as a mulch across the garden

Hi Knowlittle,
Yes, you can indeed use it as a mulch. We do this a lot where I work but its best not to use it fresh, just stack it in a heap for about 6-8 weeks til all the heat has gone out of it and any funfi has had time to do its bit and it can be used as a mulch under shrubs etc to supress weed growth and retain moisture.
Being conifer chips, it may lower the PH level some and make it a bit more acid but if this is not a problem with what you are growing, then yes, go for it. Good Luck Tbird+

I agree with thunderbird - let the chips mulch down for as long as possible before you put it on the garden - the bacteria that break it down will actually use nitrogen from the soil to do so and will take nutrients from the surrounding areas, so best to wait until it has rotted a bit first
