audio cassettes

I have a few audio cassettes dated 1978/79/80 with my childhood voice and music taped from the radio etc on them. Does anyone know what the life expectancy of a tape is? How long before i won't be able to hear anything? Anyway, don't want to risk losing my voice as a child, so i'm going to try and transfer them onto my computer. Anyone have anything older that they can still listen to?
