Do it by hand the mess will be unthinkable
Better to buy and you can then use it for other jobs. No rush to get it back to the hirer means you will make a better job. You would still have to pay for the sanding sheets if hired. No need to go to a lot of expense. DIY stores have several makes and sizes. But buy one that is not too heavy to hold up especially as you are sanding walls. Wear a mask as well. Some sanders have facility for a vacuum cleaner to be attached that does save a lot of dust getting everywhere but do make them more difficult to handle. Depending how bad the walls are start with a rough paper ( less clogging) and then repaeat with finer papers until the desired smoothness has been achieved.

I'm puzzled why you are sanding walls in the first place. If they are plaster and the answer is to make them smooth, just don't go there - you will create an uncredibly large amount of dust. Its far better to have them reskimmed.
Hi F Why dont you just cover them with rolls of heavy grade lining paper, verticaly, then paint with silk emulsion, easy job, look very nice,no mess HTH Tez .
I agree with buildersmate. If they are rough plaster, have them professionally reskimmed. No matter what you do to seal off the rooms or what vacuum attachments you use, you will be finding dust in every corner of the house for years (litterally).
