run out of diesel
I recently ran out of fuel in my Alfa 156 2.4 JTD (2002 model year) Although it now has fuel in the tank it wont start. I remember diesels always needed priming in the past. Is this still the case ? If so, how do i go about it on this car ? Help !

This is my first diesel car. I am generaly good around cars.
My passat 2005 has run out of diesel last night. I went to petrol station bought a can 5.00, 5L of diesel 4.00. Went to the car and filled it up with 5 liters of diesel. Try to start it for about 10-15 sec, couple of times. Did not work.
Same night I became a ''proud member of AA'' at cost of 130.
Then waited 2 hours for them to show up. The AA guy went into cark, cranked it for about 20-40 secs. with accelerator pedal half way depressed and it started. 1 min total, took us 10 min for paperwork,
''YEAH MATE YOU NEED TO BLEED THE AIR OUT OF THE LINE. THIS AIN'T PETROL MATE''
Is there a need to say, that I felt like someone just took a nice long **** at me..............
Went to a petrol station toped it up with 60.00 of diesel.
Lesson learned and that was the most expensive fuel tank I ever bought, totaling 200 plus mobile charges to AA 50p/min phone call, about 40 min. long and diner at McDonalds (the highlight of the night)
Did I mentioned it was 1 below 0.
Woke up this morning thinking, I need a good cup of coffe and a smoke.........

i tried turning the engine over but battery went flat before engine had primed itself. Found out today that if you turn key to position before starter motor comes on then the fuel pump runs for about 15 secs. Do this a few times and it it is primed......and it then started 1st time! Cheaper than the AA and i didnt have to eat a Big Mac...
