CD re writer

I have a combined cd dvd drive. Copying cd I have to first copy to computer then onto blank disc. I have an external writer which I used with old computer how would this work if i connected it up? Could I then make direct copies? disc to disc. If so do I just install software and plug in writer.

thanks fender worked exactly as 2 drives for direct copies of cd's BUT being old cd writer (external) it says this recorder does not support dvd read or write. Do I now have to get a dvd re-writer? HELP PLEASE.
