Finding the serial number/PPID number of DVD drive on a laptop.

I'm getting my DVD drive on my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop replaced and I need to find the serial number/PPID number which is 20 digits long - do I need to take the drive apart for this?

You can normally pull the drive out of the Dells (turn machine off or "safely remove" drive first). Serial number should be on the outside of the drive.
