A recent BBC TV programme stated that many free products are as good, if not better than, the commercial ones. The only caveat was that users should check to ensure that they use a product which is updated frequently. (This view was also repeated in BBC World Service's technology programme).

AVG Free Edition consistently scores 100% in independent tests of its efficiency and it updates itself daily. It's the program of choice for most of the 'regulars' in AB's Technology section:

While Norton also scores well in independent tests (and is frequently updated), many users state that it slows their PC and/or causes conflicts with other programs.

McAfee is generally regarded as the best commercial program but it seems pointless paying for software when a free program will do the job just as well.

Have to go with AVG used it for 5 years on computer and laptop wih no problems whatsoever, excellent anti virus expecially for a freebie, you can upgrade to another AVG antivirus at a costs but the free one seems to do fine. SOMETHING FOR NOTHING NOT TO BE MISSED THESE DAYS.

Norton is OK but Mcafee is resource hungry. Try avast from avast.com. If you use the home edition its free and damn good.

I have been using Avast for a while now,
it is free and it works perfectly.
Don't bother with expensive packages ...

Norton without a doubt. It has given no problems whatsoever on my system.

It depends whether or not you want a nice neat package that does nearly everything or you want free bits and pieces that can be a bit confusing.
