Patchy Lawn

I relaid my lawn last spring, following the hot weather last summer and the wet conditions over the past few months, my lawn is in a terrible state. Patches of grass seem to be dying or going yellow, a strange moss-like substance is also evident, the lawn is also covered in worm casts leaving it muddy and messy. Its the patches that are dying that bothers me most and the expanses of mud that are appearing. Can anyone give me any advice on how to patch my lawn up.

You need to scarify it when it dries out and ventilate it with a garden fork or a lawn "spiker"
then - seed it in a couple of months time
Feed it in late spring - it will soon recover

Don't despair. Even normally well maintained lawns are looking dismal at the moment due to so much wet weather. Rake the moss out and put it on the compost heap and as Steve has advised, dig ventilation holes with your garden fork. Avoid treading on it as much as possible until it dries out, and then seed the bare patches in late March/early April, after having roughly scraped the earth to give the new grass seedling roots a chance to thrive.

I tried lots of things for the same problem, grass always looked tatty. After years of experimenting finally stuck down weed control fabric and coloured woodchips (B&Q) on top, now looks flat and green all year round ,,,,and much better than it ever did with grass!

Costs about the same to do as laying turf and takes a lot less maintenance. Worth a thought?
