Patrick Moores eye

How did Sir Patrick Moore get a dodgy eye, some time ago i heard it was from his childhood whilst looking at the sun through his telescope.Is this the case or not.

No, it's not.

My wife and I know Patrick personally, and we've been to his home a few times.

Patrick developed a natural defect in his right eye when he was a teenager. At the time, he had perfect vision in his left eye. Quite logically, he did not see the need to wear spectacles when only one eye was affected. He therefore started wearing a monocle. It's as simple as that.

Incidentally, the irony is that the vision in his left eye has hardly deteriorated since that time, around sixty-eight years ago.

On the other hand perhaps worthy to note here that it is not advisable to look through (or even aim) a telescope or other optical devise toward the Sun without a properly mounted solar filter especially designed and approved for this purpose. The lens of the eye itself acts like a magnifying glass focusing the Suns energy into a small spot. Most telescopes gather an even greater area of sunlight and concentrate into a small area.

I read somewhere that he injured his face whilst riding a bike when serving in the RAF and returning a salute to some oik marching around the camp as a result of which officers were told not to return a salute when riding a bicycle.

PS to my last entry! If you lok at the sun through any magnification that is the last thing you will see and you will see it always as it burns its imprint into the retina. You will still see it even lying in bed with the lights out!!! SO DON'T DO IT!
