7 Answers
Hi everyone, i am looking for answer to a problem with my husbands dog, its a 31/2 year old collie, who lives out side, its not a barker at all while at home, the only time he barks is when my husband takes him with him to work,in the tractor, he is not a working dog, just a companion for my hubby, its driving my hubby insane as he barks all the time in the tractor!. We have tried water gun squirting lemon, smacking him with a newspaper, and a mussel(it was only used when in the tractor). So any help would be good, many thanks in advance..

smacking him with a newspaper is ridiculous, its obvious the dog does not like to be in the tractor so why make him be in it.
i feel sorry for your dog. why does it live outside??

Lets clear up this confusion, first of all the dog loves the tractor! if he didnt want to go in to it then i would just leave the dog at home, he runs and jumps into it and gets very excited, and also i have been and spoken to a dog pyscoligest about it, and it was on her advice about the water and no we no longer use the paper or mussle! I posted this on here for advice, we have had dogs for years and i hoping you could help, i would certainly dispute any cruelty!

If as you say the barking is sheer exitement at being on the tractor training to bark on command may help. I know this sounds silly but you reward when the dog does as you ask. So when you say speak you reward with a titbit. Then you say quiet and reward. Being a BC your dog will cotton on quickly that the command quiet means a titbit. There are other ways but it could mean stopping the tractor taking the dog out etc not convenient when you are working.
Do you keep your collies mind occupied? They are very good at making up insane games when they are bored. Good luck

AnnLinda's answer is a very good one, you could also try letting the dog out of the tractor to run up and down the fields when your husband is harrowing/ploughing etc, they love this. Your husband will always have a good view of the dog, even if he goes off to rabbit.
Why do you keep him outside???? Because he's a proper dog with a thick and healthy coat, and is kept as a farm dog should be kept.
Good Luck he sounds great.
