cv boot on clio for mot
just had my clio fail mot as the cv boot has come loose. can i pack in the grease and cable tie them up to pass ?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.If the boot its not split and it's not long happened - there is nothing wrong with refilling the boot with proper CV grease and using a metal tie to tie it back up or using a heavy duty cable tie.
To replace the boot - the drive shaft has to be removed from either the hub or the gearbox (depending which side has come loose) and requires more labour.
For Willow Tree - a CV boot or gaitor is conical in shape and surrounds the CV joint (Continually Variable joint) These are needed to deal with the steering and drive on front wheel drive cars which have four of these joints- one at each wheel hub and another two where the two drive shafts meet with the geeabox. If the boot comes off and the grease gets out/dirt gets in - the joint can sieze under extreme circumstances.
It's only a half hour job to peel the boot back, clean the boot and joint up and reseal it packing it with CV grease. Its quite a bit longer to release the joint from the gearbox/wheel hub to replace it altogether.
A side note - pay out for the original dealers CV boot if you do decide on replacing it these universal ones are really not up to scratch.
