CAn u bruise on your elbow and what causes bruises?

yes you can bruise everywhere, they are caused by an impact rupturing blood vessels with soft tissue with results in a bloody odema (a collection of blood at or near the impact site).

Your elbo per se does not bruise - it is a bone, but the blood vessels around it, and indeed in any skin area, can rupture, causing the discolouration. The blood is eventually re-abosrbed back into the system, and the bruise fades.

The elbow doesn't bruise so easily due to the small amount of tissue between the skin and bone in that area. But it is possible

you could always have fractured the bone - not very nice at all, but that'll teach you for elbowing people in the face

Although bruising is usually caused by bumping into something or by a fall, if you have several unexplained bruises anywhere on your body, please see your GP. My grand-daughter suddenly became bruised in several places and it seemed as if just looking at her would cause another one to appear, but after several tests she was diagnosed with Leukaemia. Unexplained bruising and really severe nosebleeds are just two of the signs to watch out for, plus extreme paleness and tiredness. Thankfully my grand-daughter responded to treatment and is now in remission. She was just 7 when she was diagnosed and she will be 14 before she can be given the 'all clear', but she is 12 soon and apart from an occasional glitch, she is recovering very well. To look at her you would never know she had this problem at all, and she continues to do really well at school despite missing almost 2 years on and off because of treatment.

Andy, when my son had his arm xrayed after a rugby accident, he was told it was not broken, but that the bone was severely bruised and swollen. I did not realise that bone could bruise!
