I broke my back when a horse tripped, and fell over, and I wasnt bareback. Honestly though until you have been party to, or witnessed a bad riding accident you can be quite adventurous, but these things do happen. take care.
Roman cavalry did not have saddles and they fought OK on horseback. Nor did American Indians have saddles in the old 'Wild West'. I reckon it must just take a lot of practice.
I have heard that the Household Cavalry have to go over jumps (small ones) and take off the saddle and hold it over their heads whilst going over said jumps.
Like I said, lots of practice.
