5 a day recommendation ? - BE SERIOUS !
6 Answers
I simply don't have that size an appetite to have the square meals along with the recommended 5 a day. I made a list last night of the things I'd have to have EACH DAY for the recommended 5. I've never been a veg person so peas and carrots are the only thing in that category.
1 - 150ml Orange juice
2 - 100g of grapes
3 - An apple
4 - 1 Banana (Which I can only eat if it's in a smoothie)
5 - 100g of strawberrys (Again, has to be in smoothie)
Now within that list I've also got to include (for example)
Breakfast : Crunchy Nut Cornflakes
Lunch - Tuna & Cucumber baton
Tea - Chicken Cobs with Sweet & Sower salad topping
Supper - An indian curry or other such main meal (Yep, you read it right. I've always had my main meal at night.)
Can anyone honestly tell me that they are able to keep up this kind of food consumption on a daily basis ? you'd have to have the appetite of a flippin' hippo and would probably end up looking like one regardless of how healthy the food is ! !

I have quite a good appetite, although recently have been trying to cut down and include more fruit and veg. Yesterday, for example, I had:
Breakfast: Fruit and Fibre
Lunch: An orange and raspberry smoothie, plus a nectarine
Tea: Curry (sauce from jar) - I added chicken, onion and spinach.
Before I went to bed I had another nectarine.
Quantity wise it wasn't a huge amount, but included probably 6 portions of fruit and veg.

I'm bad at keeping a check on my 5 portions, yesterday for me was...
Brekkie - lately 2 weetabix with bit of sugar and skimmed milk and piece of toast with spread and marmite but didn't have anything to eat til 12 so had a grilled cooked breakfast with bacon, sausage, egg, beans, mushrooms, tomato and hashbrowns.
Very late lunch - cooked chicken (cold) sandwich but don't eat the crusts with 2 tomatoes, pickled onions and some cheese.
Very late tea - small portion of stir fry veg with fresh egg noodles and some bacon as the meat content and sweet and sour sauce with extra veggies in. Only ended up eating a bit of it though, mostly the veggies and left most of the noodles.
Lots of cups of tea with skimmed milk and diluted sugar free cordial.
So roughly about 5 I think.

I can assure you I am not anywhere near the size of a hippo and eat AT LEAST 5 portions of fruitt and veg per day. Today it is / will be:
Breakfast - Sultana bran with chopped banana or dried apricots
Lunch - 2 wholemeal rolls with ham and salad
Evening meal - Sausages, mashed potato, brocolli and carrots
Snacks - Satsuma, apple
What is cucumber if it is not a salad vegetable? I don't know what Sweet and Sower (sic) salad topping is, but it sounds like it involves salad? The curry may contain tomatoes, which also count towards your 5 a day. Who's a hippo now tubby?

i also struggle to get my 5 a day, my daughter finds it quite easy and she is only 8 !!! what is going on, lol my sons are rubbish (even worse than me) so i have found the best solution ever innocents smoothies they seem expensive at first 3 for as litre but that is 4 good servings in there and if you check out the cartons of the different flavours you can see how many of your 5 a day 1 250ml portion covers they range from 2 - 5 .... yes 5 of your fruit in one easy to drink 250ml glass of smoothie...fabulous
