If it is hundreds or even thousands then maybe Windows is checking through them all and it is taking a long time.
Try perhaps putting the pictures in different folders, one folder for each event or occasion.
So you could have one folder for 2006 holiday, another for 30th birthday, another for 2005 Xmas and so on.
That way there will only be a few pictures in each folder.
Then Windows will not have to look through them all when you want to look at just one set of pictures.

Okay - continuing to try and help. If VHG's suggestion doesn't help or apply.
When you are looking at the filmstrip option (I assume you are using XP) and you click the direction arrows - what do you see instead of the picture preview?
I've just had a look at My Pictures on my PC - and for some of my pictures I get an Icon and a message saying "No preview available) - the icon is a Paint Shop Pro icon instead of the actual picture. If I double click the icon, the picture loads in PPS with no problem. Have your problem pictures been saved with a program other than your usual one? (He said, beginning to clutch at straws!)
I can't imagine that it is related to the epson problem which sounds like a roller problem.
Have you tried googling for info? Quite often if this is a common problem it will appear somewhere. I'll have a look tonight.

If the printer is turned off..guess what...? the pictures are there! AAAAGGGGggghh!
