Tourism in Bali began in the early 1920's when its Dutch rulers first promoted the island as a cruise destination.
By 1930 there were around 100 tourists a year visiting - and by the onset of World War II it was up to 250 visitors a year.
Clearly the growth in availability of air travel - not least the introduction of long haul flight -and the increase of disposable wealth had an incremental affect on Balinese tourism as it did worldwide. But for years there were extreme political relationship in the area. An abortive coup of 1965 - with subsequent mass killing - did little to headline Bali as a major holiday attraction, and so it was only after 1965 that tourism really took off. The Balinese wisely insisted that tourism development followed cultural guidelines (i.e not just beach holidays, but cultural education as well) which was called "pariwisata budaya".
The latest official figures, released this year, only chart the period from 1990 to 1999, when 4,727,520 tourists visited. Over the last ten days the average length of stay was 9.84 days.
