My company leased part of their business premises to another company. They had their own separate gas and electricity meters. Company subsequently went bust owing us unpaid rent. British gas have now sent MY company thier gas bill. Am I liable for this?

You say they had their own meters. Did they also have their own supply contract (i.e. get bills in their name from British Gas)? If they did, I don't see how British Gas can expect you to be liable because you were not party to the contract. I would query it (& be persistent if you don't get a sensible reply). Go to Energywatch if necessary.
