They still cropped ocasionally on Irish television after going over to the UK permanently and when their career in the UK ended they returned to Ireland & hosted a quiz show called 2Phat (I think that's what it was called) on RTE Network 2, that came to an end a few years and I don't think the characters have done anything since but their creators are responsible for other puppet characters that appear on Irish television.
Bernardo-why are you almost always awkward with people?I genuinely looked up websites to find out and if you care to do the same you will find that the 'characters' have always fiercely defended their anonimity.I posted question on off chance some-one knew more.Thank you for taking the bother to trouble me!!!
Buddy - I am never awkward with people, I was not being awkward with you, and I am completely at a loss to understand why you think that I was being awkward. I was merely answering your question ("were people inside or manipulating them"), and I logically and politely pointed out that you contradicted yourself by saying "No-one seems to know who Zig and Zag were" but also "they were puppets".
If you are now saying that you want to know who the human puppeteers were, then that is an entirely different question which you did not ask in your first question.

While I don't know their names, the company behind them is Double Z. Geddit? They've gone on to produce the hugely successful (in Ireland) A Scare At Bedtime which used to be on RTE for ten minutes at 10.20pm (remember this is a company that starts The Late Late Show at 9.30pm). The characters in that were Podge and Rodge who bear more than a passing resemblance to the two old curmudgeons on the balcony in The Muppet Show (imho). They narrated a sort of live action problem page type picture story, but with a gruesome ending. And I should add ... very, very funny.
