If you still like the idea of living in Boscombe ( it is close to shops and sea and Bournemouth is a stone's throw away)) have a look at Boscombe East - this is a much preferred area although so is the prices.
Hopefully someone who actually lives there now will be able to help you more.
I work in Southbourne, next to Boscombe, and travel through the latter every day. Although it's true that it is being tidied up a bit, I really don't think I would choose to live there. There are areas which have a reputation for being 'druggy-ville' and some places you really wouldn't want to walk around on your own after the shops have shut!
Springbourne, which is close by (but further from the sea) is a reasonably-priced area with a better reputation; Southbourne is pleasant, although there have been a few racist attacks on foreign students recently; and, as Cetti says, Boscombe East is much nicer - which makes it more expensive.
Good luck with your house-hunting.
i was born in boscombe, yes its always had a dodgy reputation, but its a beautifull part of bournemouth?? but its the people who live there that make a place. its just a couple of roads that are slightly dodgy ,walpole road ,the crescent, and the dodgy landlords.i think palmerston road is okay but best to talk to the people who live there, ive been living in devon for 25 years but i still go back to bournemouth once a year, its a magic place.
About 4 years ago I rented a flat with my boyfriend just off Palmerston Road. While we were there there was a stabbing in our road, our car got vandalised several times - windows smashed, wing mirror pulled off, hubcaps ripped off and flung across the road. Also the police helicopter was a permanent fixture in the area and it was very noisy! As per previous replies though, this was 4 years ago so not sure if it is any better now. I live in Iford now, and that's a much nicer area.
